Legend has it the Tiare Tahiti (aka Ma’ohi) was made by Atea, the God of Creation, with help from the God of Beauty, Tane. The flower’s beauty was so “perfect” the heavenly gods fought over it, until Atea and Tane went to the heavens by order of Ta’aroa, the Supreme God, to resolve the matter.

Atea and Tane passed the heavens, where they created stars and moons, which allowed life to grow on earth and in the oceans. Seeing this Atea entrusted the Ma’ohi to Mahia-i-te-tai, the Queen of the Mermaids, for its survival on earth. After many moons had passed, the Ma’ohi finally sprouted. Mahia-i-te-tai then returned the flower to Atea telling him of this and saying “it has become a plant, but the spirit of the gods will always remain within it”.

To this day, the Tiare is a prized flower in Tahitian culture. It is used in hakus and leis, giving off a captivating fragrance to match its beauty.
